Below is some of Andrew Bills original artwork designs for the artwork in 'The Well of Hope'. These are the drawings Andrew did to give to the books illustrators so they had an idea of what he wanted. All were drawn by Andrew Bill and as such he owns the ©copyright to this art - used with kind permission.

--------------------

These first two pictures are from a small part of an illustration that was painted by Jay Blakemore called 'Arangast, Guardian of the Summer rises to the surface' (also shown below in two pictures) - at the bottom of the picture you can see Jonquil and Rattajack in an air bubble and the two pictures below show Andrews original idea's.

The text in the top corner of the picture reads:

Jonquil + Rattajack in Bubble

Holding on to eack other - Jonquil on knees

--------------

The next three pictures show a proposed idea for a picture of Hellbender hypnotising Jonquil, this was never followed up with a completed picture in the novel though.

The text to the side of the picture reads:

- Hellbender tries to hypnotise Jonquil

- Eyes must be like fire

- Takes place on the throne platform

- Platform surrounded by four horned icons, each one with a cauldron of fire to provide lighting - Cavern interior

- Hellbender could be in semi darkness (silhouette) to accentuate his eyes

--------------

The next picture shows the original design of 'Mezereon', The final book illustration was painted by Jay Blakemore (also shown below)

The text around the picture reads:

- Skullcap black with gold central ?????, collar purple

 - (other background - blurred deep red flames)

- Face should look much more sinister

- Robe Black

- Purple writtings + sybols on robe

- Crystal is burning with bright white light, lighting up the sorcerer from below - (lightbulb job eh?)

 - Dragons entwined around feet of stand.

- Swirling mist (monotone) containing all the creatures Mezereon has created. Incl seven headed dragon, Ice Trolls, ?????, Ice Demons. Should all be slightly distorted and diaphanous

--------------

The next picture shows the original idea for the 'Tower of Stars' the final illustration was painted by Stephen Simmons (also shown below).

(Note that in Andrews picture and in the book it states that - 'The round stone walls yielded not a single window' but on the final painting there are windows all over the place)

The text at the side of the picture reads: (can't be seen in picture)

Jonquil + Rattajack flying to the Tower of Stars

Night time - dramatic moonlit sky - Stars should be prominent at the top of picture - Other carrier dragons (6) flying about top of tower + across moon - Top of tower is toothed like a castle top - Sea glistening in moonlight.

--------------

The next two pictures show a proposed idea for a picture of Jonquil and the Windsprites, this was never followed up with a completed picture in the novel though.

The text to the side of the picture reads:

- Scene takes place at midnight

- Windsprites fly in through hole in crater

- Each flier carries a globe lantern

- The lanterns are very bright

- In the distance the fliers whould be dark silhouettes with btight lights like stars. Trail of stars almost

- Falcon-like wings

- Drab sort of clothing

- Cliff ledge is a pathway that spirals upto the opening

- Windsprites are Banfs (like Jonquil) with wings

------

Other text around the picture reads:

Jonq wth Windsprites - Star spangled sky - Cliff ledge pathway - Cliff halfway up steep crater - Make Jonquil perhaps more startled - Brother + Sister (teenagers)

------

The picure below shows Judruff (with the text notes: 'Other Windsprites similar but without wings on hood'. And an arrow pointint to his hands stating 'Mittens')

Also in the picture is the back of Jonquil showing his attire and wearing a backpack (a rare coloured drawing from Andrew)

 ------------------

The next picture shows the original design for 'Fantazar & Yim', The final book illustration was painted by Jay Blakemore (also shown below)

A note of interest is that at the top of the picture it clearly states that this was to be Orolan not Fantazar

The text around the picture reads:

- Yim and the New Summer Wizard

- Two other robes ............... be Captured by the Sunlight

- Sunbeams bursting into Tower

(the robes in the back are lettered 'A' & 'B')

- A - Spring W (Mainly Green)

B - Autumn W (Mainly Red)

- Gold measuring chain

- Tailoring Debris
