 GLOSTOMORG

Imagine a cluster of tall towers and ramparts, nestled against the shoulder of mount Maretha, its sheer, buttressed walls, smooth and impregnable like granite armour: the castle Methregor.  Imagine a tyrant king, so cruel and dark that his people had to endure forced slavery or starve: such a monarch was Vargon.

For many years Vargon’s enslaved subjects prayed to the sun – the symbol of their faith – for deliverance from their cruel bondage.  Then, one night, Gethren, their holy man, had a dream.  A voice had told him to gather his people together and steal them away from the shadow of Methregor to a place of concealment and safety.

At the end of the following day, a cry of terror rang out from the ranks of the oppressors as the sinking sun suddenly gave life to a huge dragon of fire, its limbs and body burning with a brightness that stang the eyes.  By the time its mighty talons had closed around the first tower of Methregor, the dragon had become solid claw and scale and the tower crumbled within its grasp like sand.  Crowds of horror-struck inhabitants swarmed through the courtyard in panic and were scattered like dust before a river of flame.  The dragons tail coiled around the proud bastions of grey stone like a burning necklace and flung them down, the whole of the mountainside was showered with a lethal hail of rock and fire.

Only Gethren and his followers survived the devastation.  The old man named the dragon GLOSTOMORG as he watched it return to its heavenly mother; which might mean “Golden death” or “Golden deliverer”; and when the slaves, now freed from their cruel servitude, built a new city on the ashes of dark Methregor, they named it after their saviour – the fire dragon.  To this day the city bears the same name: GLOSTOMORG.
