EN2130 - The Adventure Begins

The Adventure Begins
Treasures to be Found

Another succession of silvery bubbles snaked out from among the weeds; and this time the wrestling form of the tarragon appeared between the tall, wagging stems: urging a large, dark object into the open.  Long strands of weed floated to the surface as they were dislodged by the dark shape, dragging along the bottom; and when Rattajack abandoned his work to refill his lungs, the sun reached through the clouded water and revealed a whole display of golden adornments on the object’s body.

To drag their find into the shallows took every ounce of strength the two of them could muster; it had a geometric, regimented shape that resisted the water, making movement difficult.

The chest was covered in a tangle of curly pondweed and green algae; and the two companions carefully stripped all the slimy wrappings from its beautifully decorated form.  The arched lid of the chest was richly inlaid with fabulous scrolls and fretwork in solid gold; there were also exquisite panels fashioned into its surface, portraying delicate florals representing the blooms of the season.  The side panels of chest were cleaned to reveal breathtaking arrangements of jewelled flowers, set in even more precious metal, blossoming in skilfully designed splendour; casting floral shaped reflections on the wet faces of the two companions as they knelt close to admire them.

Jonquil had never seen anything so beautiful in his life.  The richness and the artistry of the priceless creation raised a rash of goose-pimples on the back of his neck.
