EN2350 - Tzabazeus

 TZABAZEUS

(SUN SHADOW)

Legend tells of an injured traveller, cold with fear, who fell upon a small farming village near the border of Anconeus.  Within his grasp was an orb of great light wrapped within a muslin cloth held close to his chest with all his strength.

Such fatal injuries could not be healed and so the village became burdened with this magnificent object.  A few days had passed and the air was filled by an awesome scream for, within the village square, landed a dragon of terrible might.  Resplendent in golden hues of yellow and green, its head crowned with horns of devastating description.

The head villager conferred with the dragon, who, revealed itself to be the guardian seeker of the powerstone that had been stolen by a young thief, who had crossed its path upon escape inflicting fatal wounds.  The village was, however, poor and such a bounty would benefit its people for many bountiful years.

Upon hearing this the dragon became enraged and told the people that the suns rays would be blocked from shining upon their farm lands until the stone was rightfully returned.  The dragon flew to the highest peak, outstretched its wings and cast a cold, dark shadow over the land.

The villagers, for some time, held their ground, yet the darkened skies had weakened their crops and winter was drawing near.

The stone was reluctantly returned, the dragon bounty in hand returned its prize, yet having shown remorse for the poor peoples, returned their crops to full harvest.

The legend of “Tzabazeus” still lives.  Every year stories are told of the mighty dragon.  Gifts of harvest are laid before, and songs of the dragon “Tzabazeus” are sang until the sun sets…

OTHER INFORMATION

After seeing this piece painted by the then Head Artist Caroline Briggs at the 2000 Extravaganza in a stunning paint scheme (see pictures on this page) it was rather a let down to see the final colour choice - admittedly the piece at the Extravaganza was just a show piece but it would have been nice to see a simplified version for the production run

The name and back story of this piece was thought up by fellow collector Sy Seddon
