GAIA

GAIA

The Earth and all living things on it are considered as an organic whole, with the different parts interacting to promote survival and stability.

Aloft, floating free beneath the moist gleaming membrane of bright blue sky, is the rising Earth, the only exuberant thing in this part of the cosmos. If you had been looking for a very long, geological time you could have seen the continents themselves in motion, drifting apart on their crustal plates, held afloat by the fire beneath. It has the organised self-contained look of a live creature, full of information, marvellously skilled in handling the sun.

“Gaia is for those who like to walk or simply stand and stare to wonder about the Earth and the life it bears and to speculate about the consequences of our presence here. It is an alternative to that pessimistic view which sees nature as a primitive force to be subdued and conquered.”

Thomas Lovelock

OTHER INFORMATION

This was to be the 2006 year piece but production delays means that it is to be the 2006/2007 year piece.

One early plan was for there to be two versions of this piece, one holding the U.K. part of the globe that was to be for the European market and the second was to be holding part of the Americas and was to be for the U.S. market, eventually it was just decided to have the one version to cut complications, so we all have the same piece holding the U.K.

Original artwork of Gaia shown below was drawn by Andrew Bill and as such he owns the ©Copyright to this art - used with kind permission.

The photo below is of the piece without the base, why anyone would want to display it without the base is beyond me though.

Below is the base on it's own
