HAUNTED OAK

If you go down to the woods today be sure to go in disguise! If you go down to the woods today, you're in for a big surprise!

In the heart of an ancient forest, rising like a grim sentinel from a mist shrouded bog is the Haunted Oak. The twisted, gnarled, blackened remains of a once proud tree stands amid a riot of writhing roots, creeping outwards like a squirming skirt into the thick, frothy water.

It has a long, dark history. Used by the old forest tribes as an oracle, a gallows, and a gateway to the underworld. They believed that a spirit dwelled within the ancient oak with the power to foretell the future, and that the spirit's consent to reveal its secrets could only be bought by the blood of human sacrifice.

Sometimes the spirit possessed the very fabric of the tree inhabiting wood and bark, sometimes it took the form of a fearsome dragon, proud and ravenous. The tribespeople would gather before the towering trunk with their victim and invoke the ghostly servant of the spirit to appear. This hooded figure seemed to cast a mesmeric lure upon the sacrifice who would slowly step forward into the squirming embrace of the ragged roots, never to retrace their steps.

The blackened, scarred corpse of the oak is testament to the many attempts to destroy it, whether by fire or axe, by the loved ones of the chosen, enflamed by vengeance and a desire to end the vile practices of their superstitious society.

The Haunted Oak it is named, and it stands there still, in the heart of a dreadful forest cursed by ghost and dragon. No curious traveller has rambled along the dim woodland trails of the forbidden forest and ever returned to the campfires of the tribes to speak of their journey.

There is a hidden terror that lurks in the darkest corner of the forest, reared on the blood of the innocent, and always hungry.
