 ALKAAN
SENTINEL OF THE TREASURES OF GYRE

My friends you must take heed of my warning.  Although a professional thief by trade, my links have taken me as far and wide across the great plains and cities, for a small fee of course!, to acquire great treasures and “artefacts” for, well, let’s say, established clients!!

On this excursion, I had been given brief details to extract a large amount of gold from a so called “derelict keep”.  Easy pickings, yet who would leave such a wealth unguarded?

My trek took me to a fabulous city, neighboured by PANTHEERA, NICOBAR and, well lets say a foolish thief would dare not tread beyond the gates of FFORL and ENTELLUS.

My gaze caught a spectacular sight, the sun’s rays fell upon a golden mound of fabulous wealth, and as my client had told, situated within a derelict keep.  How foolish I thought, such wealth unguarded, fools!, my commission would be sure to make me a very rich man.

My dreams, however, were short lived.  My satchel was only half full when my finely tuned senses feared the worst.  Without warning, or sound, was a dragon coiled around the broken walls, of resplendent purples, staring right into my eyes.  It’s warm breath and fearsome teeth were uncomfortably very close as I slowly emptied my bag back onto the pile.  It’s eyes watched my every move.  A trained thief knows his limits you know!, and I turned and ran for all my worth as the dragon, well, it sounded like laughter!!

I was later caught by GYRE watchers on horses, and unfortunately told of the loyal dragon ALKAAN that guards the lands and treasures of the city, no bars or safes are needed as no treasure has ever been taken!! Nor has anyone ever escaped from this mighty beast.

OTHER INFORMATION

This was the Annual piece for 2001

A strange little note about the name of this piece - the pattern on the back of the wings was made by pressing aluminium foil onto the wax and the name is a corruption of a famous named make of aluminium foil
