Merry Andrew
A natural fool, whose main qualification for his job was an accident of birth. The mental slowness and simple childlike qualities exemplify the true commonness of man. He also serves to show everyone around him that there is at least one poor soul duller and more stupid than they are.
Everyone loved his childlike qualities and antics, and as such he was safer than many of his more intelligent colleagues. He was unlikely to upset the King with a comment, gesture or joke which might mean too much or touch too raw a nerve. Merry Andrew's condition would have been seen as an Act of God by his masters, and as such would further have served to keep him secure, in that he would have been retained as a symbol of good luck.
