PIECE PROFILES

The Laidley Worm

In the distant past the people in the vicinity of Bamburgh were plagued by the Laidley Worm, a serpent-like dragon that laid waste to the countryside. This wicked creature was in fact the daughter of the King of Northumbria, who had been transformed by the evil Queen, her stepmother. Not knowing the Queen was a witch, the King being infirm with age, married this woman. The vassels of the King beseeched him to take action against the dragon. At last the King's son, Childe of Wynde, volunteered to vanquish the beast, unaware that it was his sister.

The worm refused to fight the young child and, when it revealed it's true identity, this proved to be an antidote that broke the spell. The Princess resumed her former shape and the evil Queen was turned into a toad. The toad Queen is still said to live in the castle...waiting...waiting...
